about

Comprised of nine tracks, the self-titled Secret Flight album is filled with choral vocals, vertiginous synths, prophetic brasses and lamenting strings, situated “somewhere between intense rapture and crushing disappointment,” as described by one reviewer of Secret Flight's live performance.

Secret Flight has seen one full-length release (My Forever Mirage in 2018) and various demos shared on Soundcloud, among them a rough-hewn electronic interpretation of Henry Purcell’s 17th-century aria "Music for a While". Traces of classical influence can likewise be heard in this record - Purcell, Gorecki, Bach - with other tracks reminiscent of Julee Cruise, or contemporaries such as Circuit des Yeux.

Compared to the semi-ironic synth hooks of My Forever Mirage, the self-titled album uncovers an emotional honesty and lyrical complexity that Tses deems ‘closer to what the project was intended to become when it was first started.’ The songs conjure stories of lost love, betrayal, and defiance in the face of oppression. There are lamentations and elegies, like “A Prism” and “Inner Crypt”, but also songs of resistance, like “Vertigo”, in which Tses sings about the plight of innocent people subjected to power - “Some have got vertigo because they’ve got nowhere to go; nowhere to run, nowhere to turn; watching the sun burn, burn, burn the earth down to the core”

Despite the brutality of these revelations, there is hope hidden among the rubble. Perhaps the essence of Secret Flight is a hopefulness, a hopefulness some might call naive, until it moves mountains.
